Week 9 - Make it sparkle

We’re almost there. Almost at the end. Next week, this game has to be, and will be, finished! Right now, it has been a race to finetune the game piece by piece, object by object. Not only did it become more dangerous, it also became a whole lot more flashy.

Tiles go BOOM

After noticing that the tiles broke way too slow to be fun, we lowered their health. On top of that, the bombs have now a nice explosion fx and sound, making it very obvious when you forgot to defuse one. A timer makes clear how far the bomb is towards exploding, so you know when to just run, or when to go and defuse it.

Now tiles break faster, we also noticed that enemies didn’t actually fall into the core… That has been fixed.
Some other small stuff has happened too, mainly things that make the game flashier - the guns have a muzzle flash for example, and breaking tiles have dustclouds.
We also went through all the tiles, not only to put their health lower, but to make sure the last details are in. After making the tiles more open, the fruit was spawning in thin air; now they are again spawning out of trees. Those fruits also rotate when falling, so it looks more natural.
For the desert tile, your bullets won’t refuse to spawn in when standing in specific spots anymore. A bug with the desert tiles was also discovered and fixed, so now you are healing when you should and taking damage when you should, not when the rng-gods decide you will.
With the tundratiles, a mesh that should be invisible, was accidentally left visible last time. Now it works properly.

Other fx

The artists have made a whole lot of fx, of which some aren’t in the game yet. Look at this WIP bullettrail:

Same for some nice dustclouds when walking around on the planet:

HELP

The new menu screens are in the help guide and explain what the controls are, and what your skills do. Yes, we forgot about those for a while… They’re in now, and should make the workings of the game clear.

Next week

We still need to add in a bunch of sounds, and not all fx are in. There are also still some situations in which enemies get stuck inside other meshes, so fixing those cases will also be worked on. Of course, playtesting and value-tweaking will also be done throughout the week, to get this game to the most fun state possible.
Apart from that, what is left are optional things. Stuff like some extra, smaller fx, extra’s on the UI, some sounds that aren’t 100% necessary, but would be nice to have etc.
